Elderly population rapidly increases in our country, which is among the young countries. It is expected that elderly population rate in Turkey will reach to 10% by 2023. It is of great importance to determine and find solutions for problems of gradually increasing elderly population.

Participants enjoyed the event organized in Dr Aysun Küçükel Second Spring Geriatrics Center within the scope of “Respect to the Elders" week, celebrated every year from March 18 to 24 to raise awareness for this issue. Elderly guests of geriatrics center who are cared and treated there happily accompanied to the recital in which vocal artists Çiğdem-Cem Gürdal performed. Pictures drawn and stones painted by elderly guests were also exhibited in the recital area.

Geriatric physician Prof. Teslime Atlı, M.D. who is one of Güven Healthcare Group doctors stated that aging is an irrevocable, unstoppable physiological condition -but it can be slowed down- and continued: “Aging begins with birth and continues lifelong. Rate of aging can be different between individuals, even between the organs of the same individual. What’s important is not the person’s age, but how healthily and actively he/she ages. Habits and life style affect how well one ages, starting from childhood. However, it is never too late to get older in a healthy and active way. Rate and pattern of aging are affected by genetic factors, environmental factors as well as life style. One of the factors affecting pattern and rate of aging is genetic factors, which cannot be changed. There are some factors which are much more important than genetic factors for healthy and active aging.

It is possible to slow down aging with simple lifestyle modifications.

Remarking that necessity of visiting doctors frequently for all diseases is an important problem for people at advanced ages as they have many chronic diseases, Prof Dr Atlı said: “Centers in which healthcare services can be provided with a centralized approach and fields of specialization such as geriatrics are very important to solve this problem; psychological-mental, functional and medication- nutrition assessments should be done. Since this kind of assessment cannot be performed solely by the physician: it should be performed by a team consisting of doctor- preferably geriatrics physician-, nurse, physiotherapist, dietician, social services expert, psychologist, elderly care personnel. To improve healthcare services for elderly individuals, first, the importance of healthy aging should be understood, problems of elderly individuals should be determined, geriatrics units should be founded in every institution and work in cooperation”.
